Faith Academy of Marble Falls sophomore Faith Murphy set a new girls cross country program record while winning the two-mile race of the Soldiers River City Believers Academy Invitational Sept. 24.
Murphy clocked 11 minutes and 42.93 seconds to break Sophie McCannon’s previous record of 11:46.20.
“Proud of Faith and her new school record,” head coach Steve McCannon said. “She was strong through the first mile and then began to separate for the win. She lowered her time by over 20 seconds. She works very hard and competes.”
Murphy paced the Lady Flames to a sixth finish out of 10 teams in the standings.
“This was a very competitive meet with some quality teams as well as some teams we will see at our district meet,” the coach said. “We continue to improve but need to go up more notches to get ourselves in position when it really counts. We have put some good work in and will continue to fine tune as we head to district and state. We must be ready to compete.”
Other Faith finishers include Claire Poage who was 35th in 14:10.36, Haley Kruger was 49th in 14:45.57, Kara Kwan was 53rd in 15:00.85, Carly Owens was 55th in 15:02.01, Audri Poage was 62nd in 15:32.32, Ella Schooler was 72nd in 16:26.25, Susanna Slyker was 80th in 17:20.11.
“We had several girls who are new to cross country really drop their times and are starting to understand how to race and being part of the team concept,” McCannon said. “Cross country is the purest sport and they are buying in. That is a sign of a championship team, and we look forward to giving ourselves a chance at state.”
In the boys race, Jett Murphy was 41st in 17:57.31, Will Lewis was 86th in 20:26.26, and Noah Fredrick was 92nd in 21:25.21.
“We continue to build the boys team and look to be ready at district to defend our title,” McCannon said.
Faith Academy will compete at the Leonel Manzano Invitational Saturday, Oct. 1, at Marble Falls High School, 2101 Mustang Drive.
